What is CDN leeching?
The pirate who does not copy your stream, but serves it.

A definition
CDN leeching is the unauthorised redistribution of a legitimate stream directly from its delivery infrastructure. Instead of capturing and re-encoding a broadcast, the operator obtains working links to the content delivery network serving the real stream and passes them to an unauthorised audience. The pirate audience is then served by the rights holder’s own infrastructure, at the rights holder’s own cost.
Why it is uniquely damaging
Leeching inverts the usual economics of piracy. Most piracy costs the operator something: capture hardware, encoding, hosting, bandwidth. A leeched stream costs the operator almost nothing, because the victim pays for delivery. The rights holder simultaneously loses the subscription revenue and funds the infringing viewing.
It is also the highest-quality piracy there is. A re-encoded stream degrades; a leeched stream is the original, at full quality, with the original’s reliability.
Why it is hard to see
From the outside, leeched traffic looks like legitimate traffic, because it is legitimate infrastructure doing the serving. Watermark and fingerprint systems have nothing to flag: the content is the original. Detecting leeching requires looking at where and how streams are being consumed and joined, not just at what the picture contains, and then evidencing the redistribution well enough to act on it.
How rights holders respond
The response has two halves. Operationally: identify the redistribution, evidence it, and cut off the access being abused, which is possible precisely because the delivery is under the rights holder’s or its partners’ control. Commercially: treat recurring leeching as a security signal, because it usually indicates a compromised or misconfigured link in the legitimate distribution chain, such as a licensee whose feed protection is failing.
